Abstract

The rhizosphere effect onAzotobacter was studied under the conditions of the abundant occurrence of this microorganism in Egyptian soils. The rhizosphere effect did not differ essentially from the description of this phenomenon in the literature, however; in Egyptian soils, colony counts ofAzotobacter in the rhizosphere of certain plants reached up to 107/g. soil.

Beijerinckia indica was found in the soils of the Kharga Oasis. This microorganism occurred more abundantly in the rhizosphere of alfalfa than in free soil. The implications of the results were discussed.

Abstract

Beijerinckia indica
