Summary and Conclusions
The rhizosphere effect of sugar cane on nitrogen fixing bacteria of the genusBeijerinckia Derx was studied under field conditions, during two growing periods of the cane. Counts ofBeijerinckia in soil samples from the rhizosphere and from the rhizoplan (soil from root surface) showed an increase in this nitrogen fixer of up to 20 times in the rhizosphere and up to 50 times in the rhizoplan. Bacteria, actinomyces, and fungi developing on egg-albumin agar decreased in the rhizosphere of sugar cane.
