Abstract
After a brief review of work on acclimatization to tropical climate about 700 investigations on 47 sailors are reported which were carried out during 2 sea voyages from Hamburg to the humid tropics. Some of the results differ strikingly from previous observations in climate chambers. A complete adaptation to a mean day temperature of 30 to 31° C and a relative humidity of about 80% is not achieved even within 3 months. The most marked reactions in the exercise tolerance tests were not found at the beginning of the exposure to heat but in the third week after the change of climate. The results demonstrate the importance of carrying out investigations on natural acclimatization for prolonged periods.
