Abstract

Two hundred years ago, four-year-old Americans learned fine motor coordination as they sewed fine seams, stitching together scraps of fabric that would later become a useful patchwork quilt. Show a needle to today's preschooler and it is doubtful that the child will know what it might be used for, let alone which end to thread.
