Spectroscopic study of the TiNi-system in the soft X-ray region

Abstract

LIII-emission band spectra and bremsstrahlung isochromats of Nickel, Titan and the ordered alloy TiNi (Ti50Ni50) were measured. The experimental results give evidence for an electronic charge transfer from Ti- to Ni-spheres on alloying Ti with Ni. This transfer results in a nearly completely filled “local” Ni-d-band in TiNi. This concept is sustained by a comparison of the bremsstrahlung isochromat of TiNi with theoretical local electronic densities of states (EDOS): these theoretical EDOS do not include a resulting local charge transfer from Ti to Ni on alloying and show serious discrepancies as compared to the measured isochromat of TiNi. Evidence has been established for effects of “cross transitions” of electrons from the local Ni-d-band to the TiLIII-holes in TiNi. A complete set of binding energies of the 2p 3/2-electrons in the pure components and in the ordered alloy is given.
