Abstract
The factors influencing the intensity at the focal point of a steady thermally self-focused beam are considered in detail and it is shown that in this case the beam will not split into filaments. The self-focusing of short pulses is considered and is shown that the shape of the focus depends on the time constant associated with the change of refractive index.
