Abstract
Using a single ion molecular field model, expressions for the energy of Kramers ion states of rare earths in rare earth orthochromites (RECrO3) have been derived as a function of temperature and applied magnetic fields. These microscopic expressions reflect the various RE — RE and RE — Cr coupling constants of the isotropic-symmetric and antisymmetric interactions of an RE ion in the various magnetic states of RECrO3. These equations can be used to calculate macroscopic data such as magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat and critical fields using the microscopic parameters. The expression for the specific heat and the critical fields of theΓ 1→Γ 4 andΓ 4→Γ 2 spin reorientations can be used to separate the isotropic-symmetric Cr — RE and the RE — RE interaction contributions.
