Development of the technology of fused-cast refractories of the Al2O3-Cr2O3-CaO system

Conclusions

We studied the relationship between the structure and the properties of the fused-cast refractories of the Al2O3-Cr2O3-CaO system and the technological parameters used under the conditions of melt preparation in the arc furnace available at GIS.

The range of compositions of the system (15–45% Cr2O3 and 5–15% CaO) that ensures production of castings with minimum defectiveness and high indices of corrosion and thermal shock resistance was established.

The main parameters of melt preparation and the regimes of crystallization and annealing in graphite and cast iron molds were worked out.

It was shown that crystallization in the graphite molds makes it possible to obtain products having an apparent density (based on the linear measurements) equal to 90–95% of the theoretical density; in this case, the body of the castings is characterized by nonuni-form distribution of the elements and the phases.

The products crystallized in large (massive) cast iron molds are distinguished by chemical homogeneity and uniform phase distribution within the working zone and are less sensitive to the cooling rate during the annealing process.

An experimental batch of the products measuring 300×200×250 mm was manufactured and it is intended to use them in an industrial glassmaking furnace.
