Summary
The fine structural development in the epidermal and cortical cells of the spadix appendices ofSauromatum guttatum andArum maculatum is described. The proplastids develop to chromoplasts which contain osmiophilic globuli and some thylakoids as well as bundles of tubuli. During the emission of the odor, a considerable quantity of starch is dissolved in a short time. The mitochondria enlarge and increase their internal membranes up to the phase of odor emission. Later on they diminish. The lipoid droplets likewise increase and diminish. The development of the microbodies has its maximum (in number and size) after the phase of odor emission. Especially inSauromatum, they aggregate with smooth tubules of the ER and form extended, highly ordered complexes. The development of the cortical cells is influenced by the removing of the epidermis.
