The reflection properties of arbitrarily polarized electromagnetic waves that are obliquely incident upon an inhomogeneous material characterized by arbitrary spatial profiles of electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are considered. A scaling length that is large compared with the wavelength is introduced, and second-order WBK solutions are obtained for the TE and TM waves. Using this theory the problem of an inhomogeneous coating layer backed by a metallic plate is treated as example.

Es werden die Reflektionseigenschaften elektromagnetischer Wellen betrachtet, die schräg auf ein inhomogenes Material einfallen, welches durch den räumlichen Verlauf der elektrischen Permittivität und der magnetischen Permeabilität vorgegeben ist. Eine im Verhältnis zur Wellenlänge sehr große Skalierungslänge wird eingeführt und WBK-Lösungen zweiter Ordnung für TE-und TM-Wellen werden berechnet. Mit dieser Theorie wird als Beispiel das Problem einer inhomogen beschichteten metallischen Platte behandelt.
