Summary
-
1.
The conductivities of a number of acid catalysts have been investigated, tabulated, and compared with the catalytic activities of these substances.
-
2.
No general relationship is to be observed between the catalytic activity and conductivity when a number of different catalysts are considered, but when one particular catalyst is under consideration, the conductivity forms an index of the activity of the catalyst. The conductivity falls parallel to the specific gravity and titratable concentration of the catalyst.
-
3.
Comparison of conductivities in polymerization and alkylation reactions shows that in alkylation the conductivity changes very slowly, whereas in polymerization it changes very rapidly. Although the alkylation reaction occurs in presence of strong acids and. in general, with a smaller group of catalysts than the polymerization reaction, the stability of the catalyst is considerably higher in alkylation than in polymerization.
