Summary
The following phenomena have been observed in cats after short exposures to different concentrations (0.159 or 0.051 Vol-%) of carbon monoxide (CO):
-
1.
In peripheral afferent nerve fibres there is a decrease of the conduction velocity and of the amplitude of their mass action potential (AP).
-
2.
In lightly anesthetized, decerebrated and low spinal animals, during the exposure to the lower concentration (0.051 Vol-%), there was an augmentation of the reflexes observed, accompanied by an increase of the latency in all reflexes investigated. It was more marked in the polysynaptic reflexes. The same phenomena were observed during the recuperation period after an exposure to CO at a higher concentration (0.159 Vol-%).
-
3.
The observed changes in the peripheral afferent nerve fibres and in the spinal cord reflexes remained almost constant for several hours after the end of the exposure.
The increase of the reflex latency could not always be explained as resulting from a decrease in the conduction velocity of the peripheral afferent nerve fibres. It is supposed that an “intraspinal” mechanism, possibly at a synaptic level, may also be responsible for it. Therefore a more general action of CO at the synaptic level can be considered.
The observed changes in the AP of peripheral afferent nerve fibres and on the reflexes could hardly be explained as being due to hypoxia alone. The possibility that these changes could reveal an action of CO on the enzymatic activity of the peripheral nerves and on the synapses is discussed.
Some of the aspects of human carbon monoxide poisoning are discussed in relation to these experimental findings.
