Summary
-
1.
The effect of various factors (reaction temperature and time, relative amounts of the reactants, and various monofunctional additions) on the formation of a polybenzimidazole from 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetramine and diphenyl sebacate was investigated.
-
2.
A mechanism is proposed for the formation of polybenzimidazole which consists of two stages: a) formation of a poly (amino-amide), and b) closing of benzimidazole rings.
