Summary
Bee-eyes were selectively adapted for 1 1/2 hrs with UV-light (342 nm) and with monochromatic light of the wavelenghtsλ=586, 597, and 600 nm, respectively. The migration of pigments in the visual cells of the lateral and ventral eye regions was evaluated with the electronmicroscope. Visual cell type I turned out to be an UV-receptor. The rhabdomeres of the visual cell type I are shaped like a dumbbell; they show higher contrast than the rhabdomeres of other visual cells. UV-receptors contain only 30–50% of pigment granules found in other receptor cells.
