Summary
It is possible to record the EMG of both longitudinal and circular smooth muscle fibers with one extracellular electrode. It has been shown that the action potentials synchronous with the contraction of circular fibers always occur after that of the longitudinal fibers.
During segmentary contraction the electrical activity of circular fibers remains localized in a narrow ring of muscle; while during the peristalsis it propagates along a variable length. The propagation velocity is approximately the same in both layers.
It is very likely that segmentation and peristalsis are not essentially different, the latter being an organized sequency of segmentary contractions.
In these two types of motility the circular muscle contraction is driven by the longitudinal muscle one through a mechanism, which we may suppose to be at least partly nervous, because it can be disorganized by hexamethonium.
