Summary
The facilitation of baroreceptor-induced changes in blood pressure and heart rate was investigated in rabbits anesthetized with chloralose-urethane. The aortic and carotid baroreceptor afferents were stimulated electrically with square wave impulses (1 msec) during the control period (3.5 cycles/sec), during the conditioning-period (35.0 cycles/sec), and immediately thereafter during the testperiod (3.5 cycles/sec).
The decrease of blood pressure and heart rate is facilitated by the conditioning stimuli if the aortic depressor afferents are stimulated unilaterally, bilaterally, and in alternation. Facilitation was elicited also when the conditioning stimuli were applied to the carotid afferents and test stimuli to the aortic afferents. Facilitation of blood pressure depression in the above mentioned cases was also possible when the response of heart rate was blocked by propranolol. In contrast facilitation of the carotid afferents did not appear when the conditioning stimuli were applied to the aortic or the carotid afferents. No facilitation could be observed during “negative efferent conditioning-teststimulation” of the sympathetic chain. The convergence of depressor afferents as suggested by the facilitation effects is discussed.
