Summary
By means of posttetanic potentiation technic and splitting the vagus nerve of rabbits and rats into small branches the following conclusions were drawn:
-
1.
The efferent fibres of the heart-vagus nerve are randomly distributed in the cross section of the vagus nerve.
-
2.
The preganglionic fibres of one vagus nerve have common ganglionic cells but they have no connections to the ganglionic cells of the vagus nerve of the other side.
-
3.
There is a 1:1 transmission for the preganglionic fibres to the ganglionic cells up to frequencies of 100/sec. The diminution of the negativ chronotropic influence of higher frequencies is probably caused by occlusion in the ganglionic cells.
-
4.
The posttetanic potentiation of ACh release by stimulation of the heart-vagus nerve is probly elicited by conditioning of the postganglionic fibres.
-
5.
The sites of ACh release in the sinus node are topographically separated for the right and left vagus nerve.
-
6.
A simple schematic representation of vagal connections in the heart is shown.
