Summary
A new sensitive and selective catalytic method is presented for the rapid determination of ultratraces of copper, based on the oxidative coupling of DMA and MBTH by hydrogen peroxide and in the presence of traces of copper. The conditions of reaction have been studied and optimised. Three different procedures for catalytic determination of copper are presented. The range of determination is from 0.1 to 5.0 ng/ml Cu(II). The relative error for copper concentrations from 0.3–4.7 ng/ml ranges from 15.2% to 1.5%, averaging 4.6%. A detection limit of <0.1 ng/ml is achieved. The selectivity of the reaction has been examined. Most of foreign cations and anions do not catalyse and influence the reaction rate, even when in a large excess over copper. The oxidative coupling reaction is also catalysed by Co2+ (>1 ng/ml) and Cr3+ (> 5 ng/ml). The copper content of 22 various inland waters and 3 marine waters had been determined.
