Summary
The fatty acids in the phospholipids, the lecithin and the ethanolamine phosphoglyceride in the retina of rabbits were examined after pressure ischaemia maintained for 15, 30, 70 and 100 min immediately after wards and at intervals of 2, 4, 7 and 14 days.
The following results were obtained:
-
1.
The sum of polyunsaturated fatty acids does not give any significant indication of the consequences of pressure ischaemia.
-
2.
Depending on the duration of pressure and the time after the intervention, the sum of C18∶2 + C20∶4 increases and the sum of C22∶5 + C22∶6 decreases.
-
3.
Phospholipids, lecithin and ethanolamine phosphoglyceride differ in their response. Lecithin shows early and significant damage.
-
4.
The fatty acids of the phospholipids are as adaequate a measure of the degree of damage to the retina due to pressure ischaemia as the ERG and anaerobic glycolysis.
