Abstract

Electron flow from hydrogenase to nitrate reductase, in membranes of Paracoccus denitrificans cells grown autotrophically with nitrate as terminal electron acceptor, is inhibited by 2,5-dibromothymoquinone (DBMIB), 2,4-dinitrophenylether of iodonitrothymol (DNP-INT), 2-n-heptyl-4-hydroxy-quinoline-N-oxide (HQNO), and trifluraline, but is insensitive to antimycin A. A scheme of anaerobic electron flow from H2 to nitrate is proposed with inhibition sites for various compounds known to act in the ubiquinone-cytochrome b region.
