Summary
The visual cells of the human retina were studied with the electron microscope. We found more structural differences between rods, cones and foveal cells hitherto supposed. Some structural features were found yet not known: Ciliary rootlets in the inner segments of cones and foveal cells, cylindrical inclusion bodies in mitochondria of rods, granule complexes in synapses of cones and bundles of filaments in parafoveal synapses. The functional implications of pigment granules and filaments in the inner segments, and the problem of micropinocytosis which is found in all synapses of retinal receptors are discussed in detail.
