Summary
In the pineal organ of house sparrow, duck, pigeon and chicken typical photoreceptor cells with regular outer segments are absent. Irregular whorls of lamellae form vacuolated complexes within the lumina of the avian pineal organ. These structures may be extremely degenerated or largely vestigial outer segments. A protruded part of the cell resembles the inner segment of the retinal and pineal photoreceptor cells. There is no ultrastructural basis for an active sensory apparatus in the pineal organ of adult sparrows, ducks, pigeons and chickens. The autonomic innervation probably has a functional significance. The results of this investigation are discussed on a phylogenetic and functional basis.
