Ultrastructural aspects of the innervation of the gonads in the starfish Asterina gibbosa P.

Summary

Electron microscopical investigations reveal the innervation of the genital duct of Asterina gibbosa and demonstrate intraepithelial axons in the external epithelium of the gonads.

The possibility of neurosecretory activity of the nerve fibres is discussed. Their function might be involved in the discharge of sexual products and the mechanisms of ovogenetic maturation in Asterids.

Résumé

Les recherches pratiquées au microscope électronique confirment l'existence d'une innervation du canal génital et montrent la présence de fibres nerveuses dans l'épithélium externe de la paroi gonadique d'Asterina gibbosa. Ces fibres nerveuses axoniques sont intraépithéliales et contiennent des vésicules denses.

Ces descriptions posent le problème de l'éventualité de neurosécrétions dont le rôle pourrait se concevoir avec les mécanismes de ponte et de maturation ovocytaire chez les Astérides.
