Summary
In the adrenal medulla of the golden hamster, vacuolated and non-vacuolated nerve cells were investigated by means of light and electron microscopy.
-
1.
The perikarya of non-vacuolated nerve cells resemble greatly those of other autonomic nerve cells. Slight differences were found concerning the microtubules, the Golgi apparatus, and the dense bodies. An unknown fibrillar structure and a variant of the multivesicular bodies are described. The Golgi apparatus is the site of origin of particles resembling the elementary granules in neurosecretory cells. These particles are also observed in the axoplasma and in the Synapses.
-
2.
Several ganglionic cells can be situated close together that is, without intervening satellite cells.
-
3.
There are three types of nerve fibers of the ganglionic cells: endocapsular dendrites, dendrites, and axons. Most synaptic contacts with the nerve cells in the adrenal medulla are axo-somatic. Apart from these synapses the perikarya of the vacuolated nerve cells are provided with special end formations.
-
The processes of vacuolated cells correspond to that of non-vacuolated cells. The axons of the I. neuron approach the perikaryon from the external and vacuole sides.
-
-
4.
30 to 50 percent of all ganglionic cells of the adrenal medulla are vacuolized. Evidence was found for the extracellular position of many colloidal masses. Those can be surrounded by one or more cells. The nature and the mechanism of formation of the colloidal substance within the vacuoles is unknown. No evidence was found for pathological phenomena.
-
5.
Cilia were seen sometimes extending into the vacuole or into the extracellular space. They show the 9+0 configuration.
-
6.
Processes of the satellite cells of vacolated nerve cells may protrude into the vacuoles.
-
-
4.
