Abstract
The chromosomal situation of the GM3 line of Drosophila melanogaster was observed over a period of one year. From an initial homogeneous condition a karyotypic polymorphism evolved; four different karyotypes, identified by fluorescence patterns, emerged in the population and continued to multiply. The chromosomal rearrangements giving rise to the new karyotypes involved only heterochromatic sections.
