Summary
Experiments have been performed to try the release of Vasopressin by electrical stimulation within the diencephalon of rats during oral infusion of destilled water or isotonic saline solution.
After an oral load of destilled water electrical stimulation resulted in an antidiuresis and in an increase in urinary sodium concentration. Histological examination of these rat-brains have shown that the points of the electrodes located in the diencephalon were in close topographical correlation with arteries which are accompanied by ganglion cells.
In the beginning of the experiments with isotonic saline solution there was a retention of sodium which exceeded the retention of water. Under these conditions electrical stimulation resulted in an increase of urinary sodium concentration and output.
The results allow the conclusion that Vasopressin adjusts the increased osmolarity which occurs after primary sodium retention also by augmenting sodium excretion and not by reducing water output only.
