Use of MALDI time-of-flight mass spectrometry for microorganism identification

  • Published:
Russian Journal of Genetics: Applied Research

Abstract

The method of microorganism identification by their protein profiles (or direct protein profiling) has been increasingly used in the last decade, along with classical and molecular biological methods of micro-organism identification. This method is not inferior to indicators such as accuracy and specificity of identification; however, it is profitably distinguished by rapidity and a lower cost of analysis. In this review, modern ideas about the possibilities of the method and comparisons with the used microorganism identification methods are given.
