Abstract

Surface water contamination is a global problem owing to poor wastewater management practices, rapid urbanization, and different industrial activities. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate the current status of the Ribb reservoir in terms of physicochemical and microbiological water quality. A total of 22 physicochemical and microbiological parameters were selected from six sampling stations and analyzed in a lab. These parameters and sampling stations were selected systematically depending on the area of Land use Land cover, anthropogenic activities, and trophic status of the reservoir. The water quality index and trophic status of the reservoir were analyzed using the weighted arithmetic water quality index and Carlson trophic state index. The results showed that the Ribb reservoir has low water quality issues, according to turbidity, DO, TSS, BOD, nitrate, phosphate, ammonia, Chlorophyll-a, and Soluble Sodium Percentage values that exceeded the WHO acceptable standards. Throughout the sampling period, the reservoir's water quality index ranges from 65.42 to 101.96. The Ribb reservoir is classified as eutrophic because the average TSI is 67.85 and the reservoir is phosphorous-deficient, with a TN: TP ratio of 32.5. In general, the study findings showed that the reservoir water quality was very low, and it was not suitable for drinking without treatment; however, to improve the reservoir water quality, priority restoration and maintenance parameters should be prioritized, particularly those that exceeded the WHO permissible standards.
