Facile Synthesis and Spectral Properties of Novel Isomeric Nitrile-Rich Bipyridine Derivatives

A series of novel cyano-substituted bipyridine derivatives were obtained in good yields (45–72%) via the reaction of malononitrile dimer with isomeric azachalcones. For all synthesized compounds, spectral-fluorescent properties were carefully investigated, and correlation thereof with chemical structure was found. The developed approach represents a novel convenient method for the preparation of functionalized bipyridines containing unique combination of structural fragments.
