Abstract
A medicinal plant Juniperus recurva Buch.-Ham. ex D. Don is known to be endemic to the Himalayas. It has considerable therapeutic potential and is widely used by the local inhabitants for a variety of traditional uses. Leaf essential oil of Juniperus recurva has alpha-pinene, sabinene, and δ-3-Carene as key components whereas leaf essential oil of Juniperus squamata contains α-pinene, sabinene, and β-thujone as main components. In this chapter, we have compiled the traditional applications and medicinal properties of J. recurva. Several pharmacological properties of J. recurva include antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anticancer, cytotoxic, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity, immunomodulatory, anti-platelet, and vasorelaxing. There have only been a few systematic studies on J. recurva. Knowing the traditional uses necessitates more research, particularly clinical studies, to determine pharmacological, toxicological, and safety issues.
