Zusammenfassung
Protozoen und Würmer (Helminthen) spielen in den gemäßigten Breiten nur eine untergeordnete Rolle. In Mitteleuropa vorkommende Protozoen werden durch antibakterielle Chemotherapeutika und Pilzmittel erfasst. Die weltweit wichtigste Protozoenerkrankung ist die Malaria. Sie kann bei Fernreisen erworben werden. Andere tropische Protozoenerkrankungen, z. B. durch Leishmanien und Trypanosomen hervorgerufen, treten aufgrund militärischer und humanitärer Einsätze vermehrt auch in Europa auf. Wurminfestationen rufen vor allem in den Tropen gravierende, chronische Erkrankungen hervor, die unbehandelt die Lebenserwartung deutlich verkürzen. In unseren Breiten sind sie von untergeordneter Bedeutung.
