Zusammenfassung
Der Beitrag skizziert Grundlagen der Theorie und Analyse von Animationsfiguren und arbeitet deren Spezifik in vier allgemeinen Dimensionen heraus: als Artefakte, dargestellte Wesen, Symbole und Symptome. Als Artefakte zeichnen sich Animationsfiguren durch ihre Künstlichkeit und freie Gestaltbarkeit aus, die sich im Rahmen diverser Animationsstile zwischen Hyperrealismus, Stilisierung und Autonomie visueller Formen manifestiert. Die Möglichkeiten der freien Gestaltung führen auf der Ebene der Storyworld zu charakteristischen Tendenzen von Animationsfiguren als dargestellten Wesen: Meist werden ihre Körpermerkmale – und damit auch psychische und soziale Eigenschaften – im Vergleich zum Realfilm vereinfacht, intensiviert oder verfremdet, um affektive Wirkungen von der Komik bis zur Verstörung hervorzurufen. Durch Visualisierung wertbesetzter Merkmale und audiovisuelle Tropen lassen sich Animationsfiguren in ihrer symbolischen Dimension gezielt als Bedeutungsträger*innen gestalten; häufig bevölkern sie daher bedeutungsgeladene, etwa persuasive, didaktische, selbstreferenzielle oder polyseme Filmformen (Satire, Werbung etc.). Die hohe Zahl und Prägnanz bedeutungstragender Figuren trägt schließlich zu einer gesteigerten Auffälligkeit auch ihrer symptomatischen Dimension bei: Zu beobachten ist hier neben ikonischen Animations-Stars und medienreflexiven Selbstporträts eine deutliche Orientierung an soziokulturellen Stereotypen, die entweder forciert oder dekonstruiert werden.

Ihr „Schalenmodell“ beschränkt sich allerdings auf Pixars Blockbuster, legt den Schwerpunkt auf den Aspekt des dargestellten Wesens und berücksichtigt Symbolik und Symptomatik kaum. Will man der Vielfalt von Animationsfiguren gerecht werden, erfordert dies eine größere Offenheit und Flexibilität der Modellbildung.
