Zusammenfassung
Die Linguistik ist die wissenschaftliche Erforschung der natürlichen menschlichen Sprache, die Aufbau, Funktion, Erwerb und Wandel von Sprache unter Bezug auf eine allgemeine Theorie der Sprachstruktur untersucht. Sie ist eine empirisch-theoretische Wissenschaft, deren Ziel es ist, Aspekte der Sprache systematisch zu erfassen und zugrunde liegende Regelmäßigkeiten zu formulieren, um überprüfbare Verallgemeinerungen zu erzielen. Obwohl es seit der Antike systematische Überlegungen zur Sprache gibt, hebt sich die moderne Sprachwissenschaft durch ihre theoretischen Grundlagen und strikte methodologische Ausrichtung von früheren Sprachbetrachtungen ab. In der modernen Linguistik gibt es konvergierende, aber auch konkurrierende Theorien, die sich in ihren Grundannahmen, Erklärungszielen und Auffassungen dessen, was unter ›Sprache‹ zu verstehen ist, unterscheiden. Es besteht jedoch Konsens darüber, dass die Eigenschaften menschlicher Sprache mithilfe methodologisch begründeter Begriffe, Kategorien und Analyseverfahren zu untersuchen sind.
