Definition

An arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a vascular lesion that directly connects the arterial and venous circulations without an intervening capillary bed, and AVMs can occur most anywhere in the body including cerebral AVMs. AVMs are being increasingly documented and can cause several neurological symptoms and even death.

Epidemiology

The overall incidence and prevalence of cranial AVMs is not well known, but has been estimated by autopsy and limited population-based studies. Autopsy data shows that there is a frequency of detection of AVMs in about 4.3ā€‰% of the population. Population-based studies report a detection rate of 1/100,000 adults per year and a prevalence of 18/100,000 adults/year (Scottish population-based registry). A population-based study in Minnesota found a detection rate of 1.1/100,000 adults and 2.1/100,000 adults when autopsy cases were included. Cerebral AVMs underlie 1ā€“2ā€‰% of all strokes and ~9ā€‰% of all subarachnoid hemorrhages.
