Abstract
Background
Bowel perforation caused by direct trauma to an inguinal hernia is an extremely rare condition scarcely reported in the literature.
Case Report
We report the case of a 42-year-old male patient with a four-year history of a right inguinal hernia who presented with intestinal perforation due to a direct blunt trauma to the inguinal region. The perforation was managed surgically along with hernia repair using modified darn procedure in the same operation. The postoperative period was without incident. Follow-up for 24 months was uneventful and without recurrence of the hernia.
Literature Review
We identified 13 patients reported in 12 case reports from 1970 till 2015 describing bowel perforation after blunt inguinal trauma. Full data could be obtained for most of these case reports.
Conclusions
Although intestinal perforation caused by trauma to the inguinal region in patients with inguinal hernias is rare, it should be considered in the management of patients who are subjected to such trauma.
