A serological screening test for kidney damage

Spontaneous Tubular Damage in a Rat Discovered by Detection of Kidney Specific Antigens in the Urine

Summary

Renal antigens were not detected, by immunodiffusion, in over 700 unconcentrated urine specimens, obtained from 119 control rats, when reacted with kidney specific antisera. Three consecutive urine samples of one rat contained renal antigens. Light and electron microscopic examination of the kidneys of this animal revealed proximal tubular damage. Detection of organ specific antigens in unconcentrated urine is a reliable index of tissue damage.
