Summary
Carp pituitary extract injected in the eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) induces sexual maturation together with hypercalcaemia and hyperphosphataemia. The bone of animals killed during the laying period or several weeks later show numerous modifications:
-
1.
A marked proliferation of osteoclasts concomitant with significantly enlarged resorption surfaces. The surfaces lined with osteoblasts are not changed.
-
2.
An increase of the number of osteocytes showing an osteolytic activity (osteolysis).
-
3.
A reduction of mineralization (amount of mineral substance per cm3 of bone) of the intercellular substance without histological modifications of the organic matrix. This phenomenon is called “Halastasis”. Amorphous calcium phosphate and crystalline apatite constitute the mineral of the bone. A part of the amorphous calcium phosphate fraction leaves the organic matrix, it is the unstable phase of the calcium.
Osteoclastic resorption, in part, and halastasic demineralization are stopped by the removal of the corpuscles of Stannius before the sexual maturation.
Some effects which equal those caused by PTH on mammalian bone, are induced by injections of Carp pituitary, but a parathyroid gland is absent in fish. In this experiment hypercalcaemia stimulates the ultimobranchial body. The action of other hormones on bone metabolism, in this case, is discussed.
