Abstract

Chemical alterations induced by cosmic rays in the icy mantles of grains inside dense interstellar clouds can produce prebiotic species that may be important to understand the seeds of the origin of life in the Universe. The widespread experimental effort to reproduce in the laboratory processes involving fast ions and ice mixtures of astrophysical interest in a sort of “simulation” of what may take place in space is reported.
