Abstract
Bladder pain is more common in women, and should be distinguished from a urinary tract infection. The precise etiology of this condition is not clear, and in many cases there is no actual cure, but symptoms can be successfully managed. This can include management of other symptoms that can be the results of bladder pain, such as poor sleep, fatigue, and painful sexual activity. This chapter provides an organized approach to the evaluation and management of bladder pain syndromes, and criteria for consideration of surgical intervention. The authors also offer teaching points, such as identification of foods and beverages that contribute to flares, to help patients manage their symptoms in between provider visits.
