Magnesium levels in serum, erythrocytes and urine in protein calorie malnutrition

Summary

Magnesium levels in serum, erythrocytes and urine and serum protein levels were determined in 33 cases of marasmic malnutrition, 13 cases of oedomatous malnutrition, 10 cases of kwashiorkor and 15 normal children.

The urinary magnesium output was significantly low in a majority of the cases of malnutrition. No significant change in the magnesium content of serum and erythrocytes was seen in marasmus. Hypomagnesaemia was seen in oedematous malnutrition and kwashiorkor cases which is directly related to hypoproteinaemia and hypoalbuminaemia.
