Abstract

Sugarbeet [(Beta vulgaris L. var. Saccharifera (altissima)] is an important sugar crop that developed about 200 years ago. Although the genus Beta was known as a vegetable with high variability since the 5th century B.C., just when or where the sugarbeet developed is not known for certain (Oltmann et al. 1984). It is believed that the sugarbeet originated from fodder beet, an important forage crop in central Germany since the middle of the 18th century. Atanassov (1986) quotes Zosimovitsch when he says that sugarbeet is a result of natural interspecific hybridization between root beet of Anatolian origin and leaf beet from Western Europe.
