Abstract

The liver presents a unique opportunity to study the potential benefits of drug and X-ray combinations in a complete organ system. The entire liver can be radiated without delivering an excessive dose to nearby organ systems since they are either less radiosensitive (gut) or can be screened or even partially sacrificed (kidney). On the other hand the liver itself is extremely radiosensitive and cannot tolerate the dose of radiation required to sterilize other than subclinical epithelial tumor burdens. This chapter is devoted to a survey of means by which radiation and drugs can be combined in order to overcome this severe limitation. Recently developed techniques which promise a more quantitative evaluation of drug X-ray interactions as they affect hepatocyte survival are also included.
