Summary
As DW-MRI is mostly known for its ability to detect microstructural alterations in tissues, the current applications of this challenging technique are mostly located in the field of oncology, for tumour detection and monitoring of treatment response. However, the contrast generated in DW-MRI can also be used to provide information on the function of those organs that are related to production, displacement or excretion of fluid. Ideal targets for this kind of evaluation are the kidneys and the salivary glands. In the kidneys, the water mobility is generated through the filtration and diffusion of fluids, while gustatory stimulation can induce a large production and excretion of saliva in the salivary glands. With technical innovations allowing fast imaging with high signal-to-noise ratios, DW-MRI for the evaluation of liver and pancreas function, has also become feasible.
