Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Myopathies and Myositis

Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has broad applications in evaluating the patient with a suspected myopathy. The superior soft tissue contrast and spatial resolution of MRI make it a useful tool in evaluating the anatomy, morphology, and potential functionality of muscles. Specifically, MRI is extremely sensitive for resolving areas of muscle edema, thus identifying areas of active involvement, detecting potential subclinical disease, and providing guidance for muscle biopsy. As MRI is a fairly reproducible examination, the longitudinal course and disease progression (or regression) of myopathies can be evaluated, with MRI providing potential prognostic information and evaluating response to treatment.
