Abstract

There has been considerable interest in the identification of markers for neoplasms of the human breast. Investigation has included the search for not only discrete molecular markers, but also tumor-specific antigens recognized by the tumor-bearing host and a variety of immune responses of the host that may be associated with carcinoma of the breast. In spite of a substantial body of study, it is fair to say that there is no generally accepted, well-validated, and highly effective single marker or set of markers for the diagnosis, monitoring, or therapy of breast carcinoma on the basis of assay of serum or other body fluids. Histopathological examination remains at the core of definitive diagnosis and prognosis.
