Abstract

A paramyxovirus-induced disease, epidemic parotitis or mumps, was one of the first human afflictions to be recognized as a distinct disease entity [39]. It can be traced back as far as Hippocrates, who in the fifth century BC described the mild epidemic sickness involving facial swelling with occasional painful enlargement of the testes now known as mumps. Table 11.1 lists some of the milestones in the development of knowledge of paramyxovirus-related disease and of the paramyxoviruses themselves. This chapter is a rather selective look at the state of progress of research in this field of virology up to the end of 1993.
