Materia Medica for Various Cancers

Abstract

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a unique malignancy with a distinct racial and geographical distribution. The most incidences of NPC occur in the Southern China, North Africa, and Mediterranean basin. Chemoradiotherapy is acknowledged as the standard treatment option for the vast majority of patients with locoregionally immediate and/or advanced NPC. One drawback to this aggressive therapy is the development of systemic acute mucosal and hematologic toxicity. Therefore, the pursuit of additional novel and effective drugs and therapeutic strategies for NPC is critical to improve the quality of life (QoL) of NPC patients. Herbal medicines have been shown to be effective in treating and preventing many diseases, including NPC. Accumulating evidence demonstrates the potential of herbal medicines to care for NPC patients during and after major conventional treatments. Herbal medicine has been shown to minimize adverse effects, enhance the curative effects, improve QoL and immunity, and prolong the survival period of NPC patients. To date, at least 16 herbs have exhibited their therapeutic effects as both concomitant and adjuvant treatment for patients with NPC. However, more controlled trials are needed to determine the role of herbal medicines in NPC therapy, not only for the efficacy, but also for the feasibility, safety, and costs associated with the treatment alternative. This chapter focuses on the anticancer effects of herbal medicines in managing NPC. Furthermore, the rationale and mechanisms of herbal medicine in NPC therapy are also discussed.
