Summary
On the correlation of seismically and statically determined moduli of elasticity of rock masses. The world-wide increase in the use of seismic investigations of foundation sites testifies to a great interest in the possibility of drawing reliable conclusions from seismically measured characteristics of elasticity, as to the deformation of a weightcarrying rock mass. Seismic and static rock measurements in situ yield a ratio of modulus of elasticity ranging from the values two to ten approximately. So far it has proved very difficult to find the right key linking these values. A survey is given of a wealth of recent comparative values for more than thirty rock formations over the whole world. After a brief characterization of the essential properties and differences of both processes, definite problems are dealt with and hints are given. These may serve to illuminate and facilitate judgment on the rather complex interaction of many causes.
The stress-deformation curves gained from the static measurements yield some information. The seismic measurements profit from the use of short distances, reckoned not only from the surface, but between the various depths of adits or boreholes. Short distances are needed to obtain representative averages of Eeism for diversified rock regions. There is a need to observe the frequently neglected influence of water-filled cavities. Even partial saturation effects a notable increase in propagation velocity. Seismic and static anisotropy differ and may have highly diverse effects. More refined investigations also need to allow for an interaction of frequency and velocity due to the rock’s viscous elasticity; the latter increases as rock strength and modulus of elasticity decrease. In the past, transverse velocity has been measured only occasionally but is achieving a greater importance. Not only does it permit the determination of the seismic Poisson’s ratio, but shear waves are much more sensitive to faults in rock masses. Measurement of the attendant attenuation offers added possibilities for interpretation.
As long as a wide range of error as at present is accepted as being unavoidable, approximative values for the modulus ratio may be plotted as curves composed from a sufficient number of discrete data which are valid for a limited geological range. Some more recent examples are quoted. The need is finally established for a continuation of basic research and in situ investigations to gain comparative data of greater accuracy.
On donne quelques exemples récents.
