Abstract

The Baltic Sea is an intercontinental sea with a large supply of nutrients from the surrounding terrestrial areas forming the catchment of the Baltic Sea. Rivers contribute with approximately 70% of the annual phosphorus and 50% of the annual nitrogen input. In total, 70,000 tons year−1 of phosphorus and 1,100,000 tons year−1 of nitrogen are supplied to the Baltic Sea from external sources (Wulff et al. 1990). Slightly more than one half of these nutrients is supplied to the Baltic proper. The present nitrogen loading on the Baltic proper is about four times the estimated natural loading and the phosphorus loading has probably increased by about eight times (Larsson et al. 1985). The increased loading on the Gulf of Bothnia is less dramatic. The larger increase in phosphorus supply compared to nitrogen supply in the Baltic proper is regarded as the reason why nitrogen is the key limiting element for primary production (Larsson et al. 1985).
