Abstract

An operation is defined as a medical procedure featuring bloody or non-bloody separation of tissue. Consequently, diagnostic endoscopy meets the criteria of this definition when biopsies are obtained. It does not appear justified, therefore, to apply the term operative endoscopy to procedures that are performed for theraputic reasons. We propose, instead, that such interventions be considered under the heading of therapeutic endoscopy.
